Programs
Learning English
We offer free lessons on speaking, reading, and writing English. Our tutors are skilled at helping you gain English skills, learn about American culture, and become aware of cross-cultural issues. While practicing speaking English with your tutor, you will learn about the skills needed for job and social interactions, as well as how to navigate everyday life.
Reading & Writing
Reading and Writing students start by taking an assessment test, to make sure we place you in the right program level. Materials are written for adults and generally include workbooks and readers targeted to different reading levels. As you progress through the reading program, the materials will become more advanced and you will learn new skills.
Math
Math students start by taking an assessment test, so we know your skill level and what topics you need to learn or review. Some students need to review concepts they may not have used for many years. Some students are learning topics for the first time. We primarily focus on basic math through Algebra. Learning materials are generally a mix of explanation, example questions, homework, and a workbook with additional questions for practice.
Pre-GED
The Literacy Council offers a pre-GED (General Education Development) program to raise your skills to the level needed for you to successfully participate in a GED test preparation class.
Citizenship
A tutor will work with you to understand the material and practice for the writing and knowledge exam. You must have basic English skills for this program. If you need help with basic English skills, contact us.
Workplace Skills
If you are preparing for proficiency tests that are required in your current job or are required for a job you would like to qualify for, we can help you understand the written material you must know. An example of an exam is the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
If you are searching for a job, we can provide lessons on job searching, filling out applications, and preparing a resume, as well as practicing interview skills.
Basic computer skills are often needed for many jobs. We can help you learn to navigate the Internet, use e-mail, and use Microsoft programs to create documents (such as your resume).
Life Skills
Learn to improve common life skills such as shopping, reading a bus schedule, writing a check, paying bills, and finding medical care.
Veteran Services
In addition to our regular programs (which are available to all veterans and their families), we work with veterans who request assistance making the transition from the military to the civilian workplace, as well as veterans who request other support. For example, translating military experience to a civilian resume, or preparing for an interview. We also refer veterans to other services that the Literacy Council does not provide.
Custom Programs
At the Literacy Council, we know that everyone has different learning needs and goals. That’s why we offer customized tutoring programs that are tailored to your individual preferences and objectives. You can work with your tutor to choose the topics, materials, and pace that suit you best. Our tutors are trained and experienced in helping you achieve your learning potential in a supportive and flexible environment.
Volunteer
With opportunities ranging from one to two hours a year to a regular weekly commitment, there are many options to fit your schedule. As a small non-profit, volunteers are essential to the success of our programs, so your efforts make a real impact on the local community. Whether you want to utilize a current skill or learn something new, we look forward to having you join our volunteer crew.
